I’m writing this on a friday. A friday where I’m mainly involved in business development activities for my own company. That involves making new connections on linkedin, following up incoming enquiries to our website, chasing up decisions on proposals and – “cold” calling potential new clients.
In contrast to the other four days of the week I’m finding that, in the vast majority of cases, the people I’m speaking to are friendly, approachable, open to answering questions and open to engaging in conversation. Why is this different from any other day you may be asking?
Because it’s a friday.
Yes, we all play little mind games with ourselves to help motivate and inspire ourselves over the course of a normal week but, no matter how much you may attempt to take the most positive outlook towards your job the fact remains you prefer the weekends.
The weekends are the reason we work so hard during the week. Time to spend with our families, friends and loved ones. Time to have a full range of decision making power (mostly) over every activity you engage in. Hence the good moods of prospects and their colleagues.
Friday’s are also great for selling because it’s often the day that meetings take place – senior decision makers are often in the business and often in a more approachable frame of mind as well – hell, even CEO’s love weekends you know!
This echoes a couple of previous blogs I’ve written – this one and this one. There are no “bad” days to be calling, however there are good days and, personally I consider fridays’ – particularly fridays before a long bank holiday weekend – to be very good ones.
Don’t fall into the trap of slowing down on a friday – use it as a final push of activity for the week, feed off the positive conversations you’re having, know that your competitors will be taking their feet off the gas while you’re still out there, being active, making new connections, engaging with people and creating opportunities.
